St Anton needs no introduction. One of the world’s foremost ski areas, it’s famed for its pistes, partying and picturesque chalets. Those who’re familiar with skiing in Austria will appreciate the level of organisation, warmth and courtesy of the locals – it has to be said that once you’ve skied here, you’ll wonder why you didn’t try it sooner! Part of the Arlberg region, the ski area includes neighbouring resorts of Lech, St Christophe, Stuben and Zurs with 340 km of groomed pistes, all of which are covered under one lift pass and offer sufficient variety to entertain skiers of all abilities.
Accommodation There’s an infinite variety of accommodation in St Anton, from self-catering apartments and family guest houses to five-star hotels. Standards are high and apartments tend to be spacious and well-equipped. Many places also offer sauna facilities and infra-red rooms; ideal for relaxing before dinner.
Activities The Austrians are great fans of the outdoors, being active and staying healthy. The St Anton Wellness Centre has three swimming pools (indoor and outdoor), extensive sauna and spa facilities and a gym/fitness centre. A more unusual diversion are the unique indoor and outdoor climbing facilities at the sports centre, with sections to suit all ability levels plus a 17 metre high abseil station and, in winter, an ice climbing wall.
Getting there The three closest airports are Zurich (Switzerland), Munich (Germany) and Innesbruck (Austria), all of which are served by direct flights from the UK throughout the winter season. Regular and efficient rail services operate from each airport to the resort. For full details on transport and links to rail ticket sales, visit the tourist office web site. A number of UK ski companies offer packages to St Anton, which can be a cost effective way of arranging your transport and accommodation.
